Tips, activities and teaching strategies for Primary language teachers 5.

The "running dictation".

This is a multi-skill activity, mixing reading, speaking, listening, and writing AND adaptable to different levels and age.

This activity is more practical with a small group.

Divide your group in teams. In each team you need at least one "runner" and at least one "writer".

Print out a list of words or a text (as many as there are teams) and stick the documents at different places on the wall. The "runner" goes to the wall, READS and tries to memorise as many words as possible, then comes back to the "writer" and TELLS them to WRITE what they have memorised. The writer has to LISTEN and then WRITE every word correctly.
The first team that gets the whole list / sentence written down without any spelling mistakes wins.

Overall, activities involving team work, challenges, competition, stopwatches/timer, and rewards (effort and expanding knowledge being a reward in itself) seem to be very popular among pupils.
